Book Review, The Slap – Christos Tsiolkas

Well, what a prudish, innocent, small town hick I am.
Set in Australia, and told from various characters points of view, this is about a barbeque where a child is slapped and the fall out it causes.
The foul language total shocked me (I know, what a prude!) but it really did.
The sex scenes were pornographic (again, what a prude!)
The casual drug taking seemed to be a normal part of Ausie life?!? I couldn’t believe it.
Having said all of that, what a great book. It shocked me, and for the most part completely held my attention (I’m a bit of a slow reader with a short attention span). I really hated most of the characters, they were so alien to me, but I was still fascinated by them. I was amazed at the swearing that everyone did, even in their heads, even very old people. But it still gripped me.
I had to force myself to read the last chapter as this character was who I felt least sympathy for, but I’m glad I did because as I expected there was some ‘rounding off’ to be done in this part.
It does make me think that parenting classes should be mandatory, and held by a sergeant major from the SAS to prevent the world from having to suffer children, or parents, like those in the story.
I do feel that the book has put me in a bad mood for the duration of reading it; at least I hope it’s the book, and feel a certain relief that I have finished it.
If you are a quick reader and don’t mind feeling like you are going to snap everyone’s head off around you then great, otherwise, proceed with caution!

If  you want to buy it, you can get to Amazon via at http://www.optimise.org.uk/
I think I will have to choose something a little more life affirming for my net read.

Ifs and Vlookups

I had a query from a client today that I thought i would share with you.  Take a look at the video and let me know what you think.

Sorry about the sound quality at the beginning, does anyone know of a nice cheapish camcorder that you can plug an external mic into?

Fix Your Form for a Fiver!

I’ve  just tried to edit a standard form that someone has sent me, it’s a contract, where things like the logo need personalising, the supplier and the client need adding etc.

To be honest, the file was a mess. Every time I typed in something, the whole document jumped out of alignment.
I thought there must be loads of people doing the same.  Either they don’t know how to set up a proper form or don’t have the time or simply don’t care until the day they are spending an hour on a five minute job.
So in the spirit of “get it done for a fiver”, I will sort out your forms for you for £5.00 per page
Just email me the current “pain in the neck” form in Word format, any logos etc. and I will turn it into an electronic Word form in Word 2003, 2007 or 2010, whichever version you need.
Give me a call 01785 816993 and I can get started, and you can be more efficient.

Filters not working in Excel?

Microsoft Excel Logo
Microsoft Excel Logo

I have just had a query form a client about using AutoFilters in Excel. Basically when they filtered a certain column in a table of about 1000 records the results showed stuff that was notbing filtered for.

This was an easy fix, the kind I like!

What had happened was they had set the filter some time ago, and added new recods to the table at a later stage. This meant that the new criteria they set only went down to row 600 or so, anything after that was not being filtered.
The Solution
Turn off AutoFilters
Save the file
Turn back on AutoFilters
Everything works fine.
nice and easy, but easy to overlook.
Thanks Sue for the query.

Facebook Security and Privacy

Facebook Privacy
When you set up your Facebook account you will no doubt be concerned about your privacy.  Do you really want everyone to see pictures of you or your family?  Do you want everyone to know your address details?

All concerns I had, at first.

These features are controlled using ‘Privacy Settings’ in the Account Menu at the top right of the screen.

By default, there are some basic privacy settings already switched on, (and everyone who looks at your page can see the things listed).

Everyone who looks at your page is categorised into 3 basic groups; “friends”, “friends of friends” or “everyone”.  According to their category they get to see different areas of information.

 Here is the list

You can use the “Customise settings” button at the bottom of the page to fine tune the basic access levels of each area.
If you click on this you will see the following

And the list goes on so you can control who see’s any area on your Facebook page.

If you want to be very specific about what users can see you need to use ‘Lists’.

A ‘List’ is a list of people who are allowed to see things.  For example, you may only want your real world friends and family to be able to see your ‘Wall’ or ‘Your Profile’.

To do this you must set up a ‘List’ that contains these people (the list could just be 1 person to start with).

To summarise – there are 3 levels of security-

1 Default settings – set by Facebook
2 Customised default settings
3 Create Lists to specify access levels by individual users

Setting up a List
Click Home
Click Account menu / Edit Friends
Click ‘Create a list’ button

Give the list a name
(I have called this one Personal and have selected my wife as the only member for now.  I will add more people to this list as I need to)

Now you need to set the parts you want to keep private and personal to only be allowed to be viewed by this List.

Define what this List can see
Select Account menu / Privacy settings
Click on ‘Customise settings’ at the bottom of the page.
Change any part that you do not want others to see so that only the ‘Personal’ group can see it

Each of the main headings, such as ‘Posts by me’ or ‘Relationships’ can have more than one group attached to them if you wish, but only people in those groups will be able to see those items.
So you may wish to have a ‘Personal’ and ‘Public’ face.

To test this out, you can check out how others are seeing your Facebook page.

Checking how others see you
If you are not already in the Privacy settings / Customise settings area, select

Account menu / Privacy settings / Customise settings
Choose ‘Preview my Profile’

Using the box at the top of the screen, type in the name of one of your Facebook friends.

This will show you the view they will get.

e.g. When I typed my wife’s name in, remember, she is the only person in the group ‘Personal’, she could see my Wall (Posts by me), Family, Relationships and my email address.

When I typed another Facebook friend who was not in that List, they could only see the other items available.
Adding others to the Personal group
I will then want others to be able to see some of these things, so I add them to the Personal List.

Select Accounts menu / Edit friends

From the left hand side, select the list ‘Personal’

This will show only the members from that list.

On the right hand side is a column showing all your Facebook friends, to add them to this list click on the plus (+) sign next to the Facebook friend you wish to add.
